Today and yesterday we made a volcano because we are studying the Earth.

First, we made a cardboard base and we taped a shoebox on it. Then, we taped a water bottle on top of the shoebox. We filled in with newspaper we wadded up and covered it in aluminum foil. And that's what we did yesterday.

Today we collected sand and tiny stones from where the birds take birdbaths by the driveway. We can see them from the dining room window where we eat.

Then we carried everything to the edge of the yard so it wouldn't matter if we got paint on the ground. We are near "the swamp" where we have a walkway over a creek that goes into the pond. Also, it is under a tree where Dad put a house for Sarah's flying squirrels she used to keep in her room. (I already told you about Skit and Skedaddle.)

Here we are putting the sand and stones on the volcano after it was sprayed with glue.

The next thing we did was spray paint the volcano black.

The next thing we did was put baking soda in the bottle with a funnel and a stick.

After we put the baking soda in, we poured in vinegar with dish soap and red food coloring.

The vinegar and baking soda mixture made a chemical reaction that caused it to bubble up and look like lava, but it is not like lava because lava is very hot molten rock. It was a simulation.

My journal always counts for language arts, but today it counted for science too!
