Even though this is my journal, I let my little brothers help write a post. -Johnny

A Group Post -- posted by Richard, George, and John

We decided to do a post together today to tell about what we've been doing.

Mom and Sarah Grace finally came home from Ma's house after 2 1/2 weeks. We felt really good having hugs and kisses.

The next day Mom took us to Ma's and we had some ice cream. Ma has a hickory tree and Mom gave us Walmart bags to pick the nuts out of the yard to make hickory nut pie. We came home and cracked some and ate them. Most people don't cook with hickory nuts because they are hard to crack. We worked hard cracking them with a hammer but if you hit them in just the right spot they will open up without smashing them to smithereens.

After we came home we realized that we have hickory nut trees all over our property! We thought about going into the hickory nut business.

George had a birthday and turned 9 and Mom took us to the grocery store and we got cupcakes with whipped icing. Our mouths turned the color of the cupcakes but they were delicious. We haven't had George's party yet, but we will.

One day this week Mom bought some nice Pepperidge Farm Chessmen butter cookies and Danish Wedding cookies and Pecan Sandies. We were going to have tea time on the deck but it was still too warm outside for hot tea so we had ginger ale and milk and grape juice, except for some older kids had coffee. We also had apple slices with caramel dip while Mom read James Herriot. We used water guns to squirt the stray cats that like to butt in to get our food. They left us alone after a few squirts.

Since that day it has gotten colder and some days we've seen our breath when we go to do our farm chores in the morning.

We've been learning grammar about the parts of speech but the funniest thing is when we learned about mixed metaphors so we've been saying things like:

"It doesn't take a rocket surgeon."
"He's not the sharpest marble in the drawer."
"From now on, Im watching everything you do with a fine-tuned comb."
"People were dying like hotcakes."
"The fan is gonna hit the roof."
"We have to get all our ducks on the same page."

One day we made butter and it was a great arm exercise. At first it didn't seem like anything was happening except making whipped cream, when all of a sudden, it got clumpy and separated from the liquid. Mom let us eat it on English muffins, and then on Hawaiian rolls and then the next day we had it on toast. We loved it! We thought about going into the butter business. And then we thought about using our butter to make hickory nut brittle! We also thought about hickory nut cereal. Please don't steal our ideas.

Richard is saving pencil shavings because he thinks he could make fire starters or something to sell. We are always thinking of things to sell and one day we might be entrepreneurs.

Richard's birthday is October 8 and John's is November 2 and Spencer's was September 22 and George's was September 28 and Ma's is October 11. It is a big birthday season.
