We've been watching the mini-series North and South. It is based on two men who are great friends. One is from the South and one is from the North and it takes place during slavery. So far, they have been through the Mexican-American War but we haven't gotten to the War Between the States yet. The guy from the yellowbook.com commercial is in it. His character is a mean man who hates his wife and slaves. There are a lot of big stars in it that I've seen in other movies.

We mostly learn history from books and movies about a certain time. We have history books but we hardly ever use them except when we are especially interested in something or we are researching a subject. We got some of our ways of learning from an educator named Charlotte Mason.

I'm writing a book called "Swords and Muskets." It is based on four men who were friends during the Revolutionary War. I'm going to write a series of books like The Sharpe Series by Bernard Cornwell.

It's not much fun to write stories about the War Between the States because we lost that one. Every time we read a book or see a movie about then, I already know how it's going to end, and there's nothing to do about it. War is very complicated because there are at least two sides to every story.

Mom has been reading "Kidnapped" to us during tea time, only we haven't been having tea time lately since we've been planting the garden. We left off where David is headed to meet Alan Breck. He just got rid of the blind guy. We've been reading it fast because at the end of each chapter we talk Mom into reading more and more.

We caught a black snake in a mouse trap. It was about 3 1/2' long. James released it in the woods.

Last week George and Mom and Richard and I went on the deck set with the cushioned chairs, glass table, umbrella, and a book called Favorite Poems Old and New. We also took The Original Mother Goose. Mom read nursery rhymes mostly for them but I liked it too. She also read poetry. We heard the big old bullfrog with the low croak in the pond, so Mom found poems about frogs and toads. Every time we saw a bug or bird or flower, we found a poem about it. We were out there for hours.

George hates the nursery rhyme "Georgie Porgie." No really, when Mom reads it, he runs away.... just like Georgie Porgie!
